Montcalm Area Reading Council Receives ProLiteracy Grant to Provide Family Reading Packs

The Montcalm Area Reading Council (MARC) is excited to announce that it has been awarded a $1,550 grant from the ProLiteracy Literacy Opportunity Fund. These funds will be used to create take-home book bags for MARC families, featuring bilingual literacy materials in Spanish, French, and Chinese. The initiative aims to support family learning by providing resources that help both children and adults develop English reading skills together.

“With this funding, we can provide family reading packs filled with age-appropriate books and engaging learning materials,” said MARC Executive Director Amanda Lee. “Many of our adult learners have children at home who are just beginning their educational journey, and these resources will help foster a love of reading for the whole family.”

The family reading packs will include books in both English and a family’s native language, ensuring that children and parents can learn side by side. These materials will serve as a bridge between home learning and classroom learning, supporting children as they start school while also providing literacy tools for parents or guardians.

“One of the greatest challenges for adult learners is finding time to practice reading outside of tutoring,” said Lee. “By making literacy a family activity, we hope to make reading more accessible, enjoyable, and beneficial for everyone in the household.”

MARC remains committed to removing barriers to literacy and empowering families through education. “This grant allows us to make a lasting impact,” said Lee. “Reading is more than just a skill—it’s an opportunity. And with these materials, we can help families create a stronger foundation for lifelong learning.”
