Meet the MARC board members who serve to improve literacy in Montcalm County.
Jodi Petersen, Chairperson
Jodi Petersen is a lifelong Greenville resident, a graduate of Greenville High School, holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in crime and justice, and master’s and doctoral degrees in ecological-community psychology with a cognate in youth development. Jodi is the owner and lead researcher at Petersen Research Consultants. Her work focuses on implementing data systems to to increase equity and improve outcomes in the nonprofit and public sectors. She works with juvenile courts to implement risk assessment systems as well as conducting program evaluation for nonprofit service organizations. Jodi lives in Greenville with her husband and daughters.
Jeanne Trepins, Vice-Chairperson
Jeanne Trepins is a retired teacher with 36 years of experience. For most of her career, she taught English Language Arts in middle school. For several years she was a literacy coach working with teachers to improve their practice in the areas of reading and writing. In this capacity, she has provided staff development training at different schools and district level, written curriculum, and been responsible for coordinating and administering high stakes testing. She continues to volunteer in schools to help promote literacy.
Shirley Pyle, Secretary
Shirley Pyle has had two careers – one in journalism and another in human services; she graduated from Central Michigan University and has lived in mid-Michigan ever since. Shirley retired from the State of Michigan, Department of Human Services, and continues to see the importance reading and education have in lifting our community and strengthening us as individuals. Shirley’s hobbies include reading, writing, paddling, and traveling.
Mattie Cook, Treasurer
Mattie Cook is the director of Flat River Community Library, where she works with staff, board, and patrons to provide engaging programs, materials, and services to enrich the Greenville community. After graduating from Ionia High School, she went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in political science from Michigan State University and a Master of Library and Information Science from Wayne State University. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, bicycling, and spending time with her Boston terriers.
Jane Anderson Beach, Member
Jane Anderson Beach is a lifelong resident of the Edmore area. Jane attended Montcalm Community College and Central Michigan University. She retired after a thirty-one year teaching career helping students with learning differences and is still very much committed to helping others reach their maximum potential. In retirement, Jane is active in several organizations, including CASA, the MCC Foundation Board, and MARC. In her spare time, Jane enjoys spending time with her dogs, traveling, and reading.
John Ekholm, Member
John Ekholm is a native of Greenville, a graduate of Greenville High School, and completed two years of education at Ferris State University. He has been married to his childhood sweetheart, Joan, for over 50 years. John has also been in sales for over 50 years, currently employed as an estimator for B & E Coating Services.
Lisa Gardner, Member
Lisa Gardner is the Director of Student Success & Advising Montcalm Community College. She joined the MARC Board in 2020. Lisa graduated from MCC and Northwood University and is currently working on a Master’s degree at Ferris State University. In addition to work, she enjoys spending time with her husband and three daughters. They especially enjoy biking, golfing, and traveling.
Nancy Kroesing, Member
Nancy Kroesing is 29 years old and lives in Greenville with her daughter Annie. They moved into their house in December. Nancy helped build her house. Nancy and Annie have a garden. They plant tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, broccoli, lettuce, onions, and apple trees. Nancy has worked as a CNA for 5 years. She has worked with a tutor for 7 years.
